Comics Nerd, Book Worm, Cynical Idealist, Mad Historian in Training (WWI and its place in the pop cultures of the major combatants, specifically), Feminist, Whovian, typo-prone, Grrl Dandy, incurable pottymouth, internet-ruining asexual heathen, so-called "Dirty Commy Basturd," and Neurasthenic Farceur. My aim is to study 1900-1950 in Europe and make comics about it, and my general policy is to comfort the disturbed and disturb the comfortable. I also greatly enjoy tea.
“Freaks of gun fire” - scene in La Barque, France, during World War I. The effect caused by gunfire which has left a part of a brick wall standing, with a lacework of huge holes through it. The caption refers to La Barque, which is probably the village of La Barque, in the Ancre area of France.
Le Barque was one of the villages which was destroyed in the German withdrawal during the spring of 1917. The destruction not only disrupted communications for the advancing Allies, but also left them responsible for a dispossessed civilian population.

The contents are a little hard to read, but the sender is congratulating Kotya, the recipient, on the occasion off her saint’s day (a holiday almost more important than a person’s birthday in pre-Revolutionary Russia).
